A synchronized project will always be in sync with the Master project in StreamBIM. This means that all documents, drawings and BIM files will update accordingly when updated in the Master project.
Users, groups and workflows will be independent of the Master, hence you are free to define your own workflows as needed.
You can set up multiple synchronized projects of a Master, and also in a hierarchical structure.
With this setup every contractor or sub contractor can have their own instance of StreamBIM, see the same projects and data, but work in separate environments.
What is duplicated in the synchronized project?
A link project can synchronize the folders and files you want from the master project. You do not need to get all the folders and files, but only the relevant ones or the files that are allowed to be retrieved from the main project owner.
You do not get tags, workflows, users and groups, so this needs to be defined again in the synchronized project. Topics created in capture, are also not shared between the main project and the synchronized projects.
Ifc files that is published in 3D model will be automatically processed when new revisions of Ifc are uploaded to the main project. Unless new files appear in the project to be published, you do not need to do anything in the synchronized project to have updated model files available at all times.
Why should we set up a linked StreamBIM project?
The arguments for setting up linked projects can be many. We list some that our customers have promoted.
- I have been invited as a supplier in a project by a client/general contractor in a StreamBIM project and has used StreamBIM for documentation of own work, QA and follow-up of my subcontractors as well as a lot of photo documentation in the model, but the client/contractor can kick me out when the project is finished and handed. I therefore request a copy of the project with my data so that i may have documentation available for any warranty and disputes.
- With an own-linked project you ensure ownership of own data and can choose when to close down the project.
- As a contractor/subcontractor, I would like to see the objects covered by my contract as easily as possible. I therefore want a different layer structure in the models and other structure on labels on documents.
- In a linked project, you control this yourself, and you do not need to include all the folders and documents from the master project. You can also set up sync from your own document hotel, like Sharepoint or others, as well as have own folders in addition to what is synchronized from StreamBIM's main project.
- I want to set up my own workflows for self-inspection, follow-up of subcontractors, but project owners think that there will be too much "noise" in the project.
These are some arguments we have heard, and there are certainly many we have not heard too.
